Auto transformers are single wound transformers used for voltage transformation in the lower range. These can be either step-up or step-down as required.

Auto transformers, being single wound, are cheaper in price and of very high efficiency, in most cases exceeding 99%. In general voltage ratio above 1 : 2 makes the transformer uneconomical and in such cases two-winding transformers are recommended.
